EA Loosens Spore's DRM, Account Restrictions

Gamasutra - September 19, 2008

Submitted by mrahaju (9) at 3:56AM PST on September 22, 2008

EA is expanding its Spore Online Accounts to allow multiple users. Users can have up to five screen names per online account. The publisher received criticism from game owners over Spore's limit of one account per copy, which many felt was too restrictive for homes with several members looking to play the title. The issue was exacerbated by a misprint in Spore's manual claiming that users can have "multiple Spore accounts for each installation of the game."

By design, Spore is all-encompassing, with nigh infinite possibilities for gameplay, from crafting the very essence of life to managing entire galaxies. But sometimes, you have to go to the bathroom, it's a scientific fact. For those moments, there's the Spore Galactic Edition announced today by Gamestop, available for $79.99.

Spore: While not slated for release until late 2008, this highly anticipated game has the potential to be an incredibly powerful tool in the classroom for teaching students about evolution and the behavior of organisms. The game allows students to create a creature which they can help evolve from a multi-cell organism to an interstellar exploring species.

Submitted by gamegiants (1260) at 1:03PM PST on May 1, 2008

from spaceoddity blog "As I reported a while ago Spore was rumored to be playable during the SCI-FI event in London, that started yesterday. The most recent news seemed to confirm this. Today Necrox posted at Gaming Steve’s that the EA news item about this, posted April 28th, says differently; only a trailer of Spore will be shown. :("

Spore, the highly anticipated game, is getting slammed all over the internet for many issues, will it get fixed? Because of this, the creators of Spore have issued the following statement hinting at an updated DRM system, one that will not force you to constantly authenticate your game:

Spore And The Great DRM Backlash

TechCrunch - September 14, 2008

Submitted by rjboettcher (793) at 6:37PM PST on October 28, 2008

I know this is an older article, but it has an interesting commentary on DRM. "If we can learn anything from the troubled launch of Spore, a videogame many people have been looking forward to for years, it is that binding products with digital rights management (DRM) restrictions hurts more than it helps."

EA's 'Spore' a week from being finished

CNET News - July 29, 2008

Submitted by wetain (823) at 2:52AM PST on July 30, 2008

After more than three years of anticipation, Spore is almost finished. Electronic Arts' evolution game, from legendary designer Will Wright's Maxis studio, is about a week from going "gold," I was told Tuesday by Thomas Vu, a producer on the game who gave me a demo Tuesday morning. Going gold, of course, means the game is about to be sent to manufacturing. EA has said that Spore will launch September 7.
