A UK-based video games company is taking advantage of Nintendo’s ongoing Wii shortage, and launching its own range of PS2 motion-controlled video games. Developed by In2Games, the RealPlay range includes several Wii-esque titles, such as pool and golf. Each game copy ships with the required piece of kit to ensure gamers’ movements are replicated on screen

I myself doubt that a big corporation like Sony which has tasted the power of being the big console player won't be willing to do what MS did (throw a lot of money at problem to solve it) and would just go away, but I'd like to understand your point of view. What do you mean by the last part of your post? So they'd invent a profitable ps4? A new console is rarely profitable in the first years. And if they abandon ps3 so soon how can it be profitable?
But there's something else that I've been meaning to ask: is there any place I could study comparative graphs of yearly console sales by year in the lifecycle? I'm very curious how people calculate. For example 105 mil for lifetime Wii... we had 14mil for first year (vgc)... so does that mean that the peak sales are in year 3? Or is it 4? I doubt that it will. In another 3-5 years (I believe it will be 3 max), Sony will releasing their next console (if their gaming division isn't gutted by the corporate execs). At that point, Sony will do what they did on the PS/PS2...keep putting out profitable hardware while quickly removing first party titles from the lineup to encourage consumers to buy their new sell-at-a-loss console.[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 182 ]bids

great points! I've often thought about that: how companies often drop a piece of electronics when it drops below a certain price point and instead of going lower push more features.
However this may be the kind of attitude needed to justify huge research investments and sell-at-loss years such as with the ps3.[ Oracle ] [ Level 20 ] [ Rank: 444 ]bids

Companies generally want to encourage consumers to move on to their next product, not support the old one and keep it viable. I understand you're saying that this is a different market than what the PS3 is going for, but I think that Sony would want tot ry and push as many consumers as possible towards the PS3, as opposed to their older model.
I think it comes down to return on investment. Any effort/money that Sony puts into supporting an older console won't give them as high a return as money put into their new console (which has 4-5 before it's old hat).[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 182 ]bids

I agree, though it does make one think: should say Sony back this up as their own in future generations I think we could easily major consoles with longer lifespans being turned in their 6+ years into such casual devices, benefiting both from low prices and huge install bases. It would then really justify big investments in a console technology: first years they sell it as a high tech device then they reinvent it like this.[ Oracle ] [ Level 20 ] [ Rank: 444 ]bids

The article shows about a $70 pricetag for EACH game. I think that alone will sink them.
If the developer was selling a controller that could be used with other games, perhaps...but the pricetag is too high and the applications are too limited. I can't see this making much of an impact.[ Oracle ] [ Level 21 ] [ Rank: 182 ]bids

I said "sell at a loss" because I believe any 4th console by Sony would be initially sold at a loss (only Nintendo seems to go against that).
If a console isn't profitable in the first 2 years, it will likely never be profitable. For example, while the XB always lost money, MS finally turned a quarterly profit within the 2nd year of the 360.
Also, if Sony is faced with a money-losing console for the next year, they'll have to do something. The PS3 was developed on the profits of the PS2...so where will the money for the PS4 come from?
