my opinion is that sony needs to boost sales now. they were able to wait longer for previous generations because they were already the leader in sales.
however the 360 is already in it's 3rd year. if they don't get third party developers more confident in the platform (enough to devote more development and research time to code on such a different and difficult architecture), then it might be too late a year from now. a year from now there's going to be more solid rumors and details about the 360's successor.
if the 360's successor gets to market before the PS3 picks up in sales (kind of doubt this will happen), then Sony's going to be left in the dust and possibly forced to make another next gen console. that IS what kind of happened with the PS3: microsoft's release led to a rushed PS3 launch.
of course not saying the PS3 won't continue to sell if the next 360 launched; look at the PS2 (though the situation is slightly different). just saying that the PS3 needs any sort of boost at this point.
