Laoldar, I would almost tend to agree with you, while I would dispute the higher quality games theory (this game is in the same league as Gears of War), but I would agree that other, newer games will come along that will push this game to the back. I truly think that Insomniac could get many more sales if they had released this game later in the consoles life, like the end of this year or if they make it a budget title for like $30.
This game could not have become a blockbuster because there was not the installed base to make this game a blockbuster. I still expect the sales of this game to get to around 1.4 million if they can keep some level of interest in the game as the PS3's installed base continues to grow.
Rather than "strong and consistent seller", many would describe this game as "one of the only games worth picking up on a new system". Once other high quality games appear on the PS3 this year, sales will fall off. We don't have any reports of cumulative sales overseas except for a news report that sales plummeted in its second week in Europe. In fact, vgcharts doesn't even show it as passing one million shipped (changed from earlier it seems?).
Unless we get a report of very strong sales numbers in Europe, I don't see any reason to consider this stock undervalued, nor has its US sales been that encouraging.
according to vg charts as of the week of may13th resistance sold 8,500 copies bringing it to a total of 685,659. thats for the u.s. only seems to still be going strong and is a consistent seller. in the u.s only. this is an undervalued stock
I think Resistance will become a pack-in with the PS3 eventually or stores will begin bundling it for free at some point. Also Resistance will probably become a Greatest Hit this fall. I think it will reach 1.5 million by the end of the year and over 2 million lifetime.
Its sales are likely because it's the best (and some sources would say, the only decent) game for the launch and early months of the PS3. Once larger titles come out this year (franchises like GTA, DMC, FF, MGS, etc), it'll probably get lost in the shuffle.
That being said, it just now hit Europe. If it does comparable numbers there (right now America listed at 660,000 shipped w/580,000 sold and PAL has 220,000 shipped), it should be able to hit its price. I figure this one will end up around 155-170, depending on how its European sales do.
Given how its American numbers slipped in February, I doubt it'll get much further thant he current shipped numbers.
Joe80, I saw people claiming that RFoM has hit 1 million copies sold on other message boards last week or the week before (not sure what their sources were).
I think we all expected that to happen (stock is priced around 130 DKP), but this was slower than I had thought. I actually don't think this is bullish news for the stock as the sales seem to stumble across a million.
This game didn't turn out to be the killer app people were claiming back in November. It has certainly done better than Perfect Dark for 360, but it certainly wasn't Halo for the original Xbox. For that reason, I don't think this is a game people will be buying for years to come. The game still has another 30% to sell to hit the stock price with its appeal decreasing further from the launch hype and more refined games hitting the PS3.
People appear to have priced in much higher prediction for the PS3 following the European launch. However, the flaghsip PS3 games like Resistance and Motorstorm have not quite shared the coat tails, when I think their sales will definitely increase w/ a larger than previously forecasted PS3 userbase.
Also worth noting, this game lead the PS3 sales for the UK launch, as well as all software sales for last week (again, in the UK). Not surprising, as it's the "flagship" title, but now it's official.
Alpha, I looked up how well Resistance is doing in Japan, and I have to agree, they are pretty good numbers considering: its Japan and they don't like FPS that much and there are not that many PS3s on the market there. The game has sold 126,500 copies in Japan since it's release, which is pretty good.
I wonder, though, how well this game will do in Europe, I expect it to sell at least 500,000 copies over its lifetime there assuming the PS3 grabs hold. A lot of Resistance's sales now are not really due to the game but the number of PS3s Sony can put into the market, after all this should have been the Gears of the PS3. Hopefully in the next month or so we can get data on how many people that bought PS3s in Europe bought Resistance.
