I am really surprised how well Resistance is selling in Japan. The Japanese market is not a good place to sell a first-person shooter...but I guess as one of the few great PS3 games, they were willing to pick this one up.
Anyone here from Japan and can share a better perspective on that market? It'd be nice to hear about that. So far it sounds like most people here are in North America or Europe.
Additional online content coming in April is big. It 's going to keep the US and Japanese players promoting the games to their friends since online is where this title really shines. Until something else comes out with 40 player lag-free online gameplay this is going to be a premium title.
Also think about Xmas time when this thing goes Platinum and new PS3 users are looking in the bargain bins for good games. $39.99 great games like this are going to sell like hotcakes after someone drops $599 on a system. As opposed to the $59.99 ones that their friends may or may not have.
With the launch of the PS3 in Europe and Australia coming soon this game should pick up in sales. The low numbers for February are disappointing but considering it was a slow month and considering that there are not many PS3s on the market yet, the numbers are not to bad. Hopefully this game will continue to have units sold as the PS3 installed base becomes bigger. We are predicting lifetime sales so this game may over time be able to get into the 1.5 million range worldwide. The game sold 74,250 copies in February bringing its total in the US to 572,500 copies sold.
Resistance is getting additional content (either single or multiplayer) in April and Phil Harrison eludes to that it may get a sequel. If this goes over well I think Resistance will get some more name brand recognition and pull in even more sales. Regardless I have been long on Resistance and anticipate it doing well in EU. http://kotaku.com/gaming/resistance-fall-of-man/resistance-gets-new-content-in-april-239855.php
If we assume Europe and Australia sell just 50% the numbers in NA, that'd be 249,125 copies for a total of 861,625 copies with a people just finally able to get PS3s. I think the stock has some upside.
I think that people haven't realized that this game is to PS3 as Gears of war is to Xbox 360. Once people realize that then the this stock will skyrocket! so now is the time to buy while the gettin is good.
I agree with Alpha, this game seems very undervalued if we are going by sales over lifetime, this game will easily pick up, are people forgetting the launch of the PS3 in Europe? Also this is one of the centerpiece games for the PS3 and Sony isn't going to let that go away for awhile. This game does almost everything right and once the PS3 picks up, this game will sell around the 2 million mark probably.
December numbers for Resistance were actually really good. The game sold 248,500 copies, 3x what it sold in November, bringing the total to 328,500 copies sold. If this momentum continues into January this game could sell over a million.
Just looked up VG charts and they have Resistance selling 80,000 copies in US in November. This is better than the 66,000 copies guess I made on Dec 11. I believe it sold pretty well in Japan as well. This game could pick up a lot once PS3 supply becomes more available.
Check out the NPD numbers in the Dec 7 article and the analysis in the Dec 8 articles I posted under PS3.
The Dec 8 article says "NPD figures show that Resistance sold a little more than one copy for every three PS3 systems on the market."
The Dec 7 article says "NPD shows 197,000 PS3 systems sold for the month."
That means we're looking at about 66,000 copies sold so far. I think this is the best we could've expect Resistance to be doing by this time period w/ the current PS3 install base so I think this is a bullish indicator on the stock.
