9 months ago, the legacy of LAIR begun. Announced as a launch title for the Playstation 3, the hype around this game was tremendous. As we all know, the launch of PS3 came and went, and LAIR was nowhere to be seen.
The v1.92 released last night has cleared up the load times and made the controls a bit more responsive. Thanks for your input Lithium, I was beginning to think I was the only person playing this game and defending it.
I didn't find the motion controls for Lair all that bad. Yes... I would have like an option for regular controls. Yes... the motion sensing controls are not perfect always. But, they are not insanely tricky and f-ed up. Adjust your 0 degree point if needed in options and go from there. Only small motions are needed to fly around. Similar to doing precise things with the Wiimote. Also the IGN review is horrible. He compains about the bridge level where you must lock on to the toros and he can't do it. Well first off, it locks on well and if you need to turn around the 180 works. Just level out your dragon and pull up quickly. Works unless your already doing maneuvers. Also, there are brakes, where your dragon catches the air in his wings. Just slow down and shoot fire at them. It was already locked on to them for me every time. You can even hover for a bit and flap in place while launching fire. I beat that level first try. Not saying is the awesomest or something, but the level isn't brutal as he makes it out to be. Don't been fooled by the low review.
Is there anyone else on the exchange besides Makidian who has played this game and can comment of whether they think the reviews coming out for the game are accurate (in their opinion)?
The video Makidian submitted seems to indicate that the controls work fine if you know how to use them, but I'll have to get hands-on to see how good they actually work. This may be a case of reviewers giving the game below average reviews, but word of mouth (which when I'm buying a game I take my friends word over a reviewers any day) overrides them and the game ends up selling anyways.
Still having problems playing lair because of the controls ? Here is a quick video tutorial made by lairplayer5 in response to the numerous complains that reviewers had with reviewing this game.
*I don't like this site much because of the ads but this explains a lot
@welshbloke, Do you mean here on SE or the real world, or both? I still think there is some time to tell, word of mouth is just as powerful as reviewers for the sites, and there are a great many sites left to do reviews from, well, all over the world. There is an article I put from Gamers-Creed with an included video that kind of drives my point a bit.
I think the problem with Lair is the damage is now done and it is unlikely to be undone. I agree we have more reviews to come but I cannot see then really making any difference now. The perception is this game sucked and is bombing.
@kspraydad,The reader average is also ten points higher at 6.9 or 69 depending on which scale is used. So I still think reader reviews will continue to be higher than journalist reviews
There are still a lot of reviews to go, which as I said could be better or worse. As it is that list is only ten of some thirty or more major gaming sites. PSU gave it a 8.5/10 which is what I would give it, maybe an 8 but no less. However ArsTechnica says skip it. It's going to go straight down the middle on this with reader reviews much higher than the game reviewer gives it. Kotaku's reviewer did a video review and is still on the fence. People site the controls and framerate issues of which I have had none. The ArsTechnica article mentions several flaws with the SIXAXIS, like turning, and it turns fine every time. I beat the first level with a medal on my first try. Completing the tutorials may have helped more than most people realize, but I didn't do them until after the second chapter, so....I am just at a loss for the reviews for this game, they really make no sense to me, and I don't think they are giving an accurate representation of the game itslef. I happen to wholeheartedly agree with PSU's review. Here are the link's:
