Mark Rein, VP of Epic Games, has provided an update on the status of the Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament 3. In an interview with the Guardian Unlimited, Rein said that "the game is up and running on Xbox 360 - it has been for a long time, and its running wonderfully - it just doesn't have any Xbox Live written into it yet so that's the work that remains."
According to the following German magazine image, Unreal Tournament on the Xbox 360 is around 90% complete and due out sometime approximately around April next year.
Which brings us to the other surprising loser at the retail outlet - Unreal Tournament 3 - although its lack of success can be put down to rather different factors than Crysis.
in response to teamxbox's article stating they will start working on the 360 version: "What I probably should have said was 'start working on it again'. We had the game up and running on all three platforms up until last spring...We stopped working on the 360 version so we could concentrate our efforts on shipping the various PC and PS3 versions."
Maybe Mark Rein and Gabe Newell should get together then as both are trying to achieve the same thing with the Xbox and mods.
Obviously mods are fairly easy to deploy but a lot more controlled within Live, so "open" system aside this will be a discussion about how much will we have to pay to provide the mods via the Live system.
This all seems rather ironic that the paid for service lends itself to a model that makes even more money. I think Microsoft should be working harder on allowing free content on certain game types especially whislt they maintain a paid for online gaming subscription.
