This smacks of the usual console war propaganda. Ubisoft fired a recent salvo and now Epic fire one back.
I understand a bit more about the dev comment regards the PS3 and Ai and believe it is possible that in certain conditions it would be deemed more difficult and hence less likely to have the time spent fine tuning a PS3 title than a 360 verion of a game. That said I still remain sceptical of Ubisoft's motives.
This on the otherhand is just plain stupid. I would like to iniatate the
"Not to Posh to swap"
campaign for all those guys at Epic that have forgotten that the user base is able to swap discs out in an emergency i.e. such as a map load.
I do not doubt that it is more convenient to not optimise your code for compression and that on occasions it may even be necessary to have more than one disc but to suggest that we would have to have fewer maps because everything did not fit on one disc does not make sense.
Speaking at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival, VP of Epic Games Mark Rein indicated that Unreal Tournament III for the Xbox 360 might have to get cut down in order to cope with the limitations of the console's hardware. Answering a question from the crowd about whether disc size would be a problem with an Xbox 360 port, he stated that "We'll compress some things. But you know, we may have fewer maps on the 360 version. Blu-Ray has definitely given us a lot of legroom." "If you think down the road, well maybe the next UT beyond this one, on Blu-Ray disc, we might fill the whole damn disc with all the cool stuff the mod makers make."
It is possible that the system could suffer from exhaustion in this genre, but with Epic already having created a hit for Microsoft, and the fact that they can market this game under the banner of being from the creators of Gears of War, will possibly allow it to push ahead of the pack and stand out. Also, this game has the Unreal Tournament name behind it, which is well respect.
I do not believe that the news of a timed exclusive ( I already knew about it at the time of the post) will hurt this game. First, the PS3 will not have as many systems when this game is released on that system as the Xbox360 will have when this game is released on it. From this I think the news of it not coming out this year due to a timed exclusive will actually help it, since the Xbox360 will have a chance to gain even more consoles due to the winter boost (and the likely boost due to Halo 3) so that when this game is released it will actually fair better than if it had been released earlier. Also, if they release it during a drought (possibly in January or next summer) they could seize upon a more open market rather than having to face competition for people's attention during the winter/Christmas season.
This game's price continues to fall (at one point predicted to sell less than 800,000 copies), which seems contradictory to what has been argued for in previous comments. Joe80, Gaara42 (first and second post), audioeric and GamerMan76 have all argue in previous post as to why this game should be predicted to sell at least 1.15 million copies, though 1.5 million seems more likely. Games like this game, such as Gear of War which is developed by the same studio, are predicted to sell: 1.81 million, 5.05 million, 1.15 million, 1.72 million, and 1.43 million. Keep in mind those are all Xbox360 games and are all shooters, much like this game.
Combine all that and this game is undervalued and should be predicted to sell at least 1.15 million, though 1.5 million seems more realistic.
"The latest issue of the Official Xbox Magazine comes with a disc containing a short documentary feature on Unreal Tournament 3, featuring a look at some new maps and some background information on the game. In the clip it is revealed that the game will be shipping with 3 to 4 dozen multiplayer maps in the retail version. That's 36 to 48 maps right from the get go. A staggering amount, and the single player portion of the game is said to have even more!"
I agree, I am holding on for when sense prevails. Although this seems to affect a few titles. I will eat my hat if Half Life 2 only just tops 1 million (I currently do not possess any headgear so this is a pretty safe bet).
Gaara42 & Joe80... I'm sitting here reading your comments and they are saying the same thing I am thinking. this gaem should sell 1 million easily and I don't think 1.5 million is off base by much.
Maybe I'm in the dark but why is this game not higher than it is. I know Halo 3 is launching around the same time but this game should be able to stand on it's own and sell 1 million if not the full 1.5 million.
If someone could shed some light on this. i would appreciate it :)
I agree with Joe80, this stock is trading much lower than the Rainbow Six or GRAW stocks are, even though I fully expect, with the recent success of Gears of War, that this game will sell at least 1.5 million on the Xbox360. I think the current price for the PS3 version in about right, but this game should be much higher than it currently is. Does anyone have sales data for the two Unreal games released on the original Xbox?
