Im not suggesting that Nintendo's build quality is bad, just that as they are using old technology unlike the PS3/360 so the production costs are alot lower and yet it still has a fairly high price point (360 Arcade is cheaper). Although obviously with it selling like ot cakes theres no incentive to drop it and that would likely cause more supply problems so of course Nintendo wont do that. Also the price of accessories is extortionate, £40 ($80) for an extra controller!
I was also more comparing XBL to PSN as they are much more similar networks with more freedom and rivals. Unlike Nintendo's service which as you say is much more restrictive, and rightfully so as they cater for the younger audience. 5 year olds playing something like Mario Kart on XBL would be completely inappropriate.
And of course as a parent it is your duty to protect your children as long as when the time is right you allow them more freedom. Guide them, but once they're old enough let them make their own mistakes, its the only way us kids learn :)
