@feelmyring, I see what you mean now, but some people who own just the Wii may put off buying this title until there are copies of the game in stores that has the problem fixed instead of having to deal with getting a replacement copy. There will be a small effect from people getting it on other platforms, but not very large in comparison to overall sales numbers like you said.
@lstormy10, My point was that the convergence between people who must buy this game for Wii (as opposed to 360 or PS3), and people who will not buy this game because of a sound issue, is in my mind so miniscule as to not matter to the overall sales numbers.
Honestly, the mono sound isn't that big of a deal. You only really notice it during co-op and sometimes during star power (it can also vary depending on what sound setup you have...on surround I don't notice it much). Songs still sound good and the game is quite fun, so don't let it deter you from checking it out.
Also, Rock Band has not been announced for the Wii yet, and even if it ever does come to the system it will likely not be until late 2008 (probably after GH4 comes out).
@lstormy10, I can see feelmyring doesn't think it's a big deal, but I think it has at least a small effect. I know I've considered getting GH3 for Wii, but the combination of the mono sound issue not being fixed yet and uncertainty about whether GH3 Wii guitars will work with eventual Rock Band Wii or vice-versa tell me to hold off until things are cleared up and I know my money is being spent best.
@feelmyring, Though in the minds of people less into gaming, having one version supposedly superior to the other is something that will sway them to buy the version for a different system or wait until the problem has been solved.
@lstormy10, Any argument about the sound of GH3 Wii vs. any other GH is pretty much bunk, I think. If someone wants Guitar Hero, and only has a Wii, I don't think there's going to be anything (save availability) that will prevent them from buying this game. The people that wouldn't buy this game because of a mono output are either audiophiles who most likely have a superior system to begin with, or probably weren't really going to buy it in the first place, and are just looking for an excuse.
@JoshuaJSlone, Also you cannot forget that the sales have up until been hurt by the mono sound output issue that still has not been resolved completely and sales may increase after this issue has been resolved and the copies on store shelves no longer have the issue in them.
@Gaara42, Putting aside an argument about VGChartz as a reputable source of information, this is a series that's previously shown legs, has been reportedly hard to find on Wii, and should continue selling well both as new shipments come to market and new people join the Wii userbase. I imagine it will continue doing pretty well until Guitar Hero IV and to a lesser extent Rock Band Wii start sapping away sales.
vgchartz has this game at 1.13 million. I am supposing this is predicted to sell slowly but for a very long time or else the current prediction is probably overpriced.
I just wanted to bring up this post and congratulate you on being so close (Gaara42 was close as well). Impressive that you two (and other who were a bit further off) were able to make accurate predictions based on the WFC data (average connections to WFC over the 2 weeks of sales showed about 3 connections weekly per copy sold, FYI).
Also, this supports my feeling that Wii owners are less likely to sign up for 3rd party services than PS3/360 owners. While the PS3 initially had more players go to the GH site, the Wii sold nearly 3 times the units. The 360 had a MUCH greater presence on the site, but only had twice the sales of the Wii (no doubt due to GH2 players).
Something for people to consider when other similar information comes in; Wii players are less likely to use services like the GH leaderboards.
