Many of us already suspected that Wii Fit couldn't make us fit, but now you can add Nintendo as a name on that list of skeptics. Because during a recent interview on Nintendo's own site, Miyamoto spilled the beans that, no, Wii Fit is not a recommended replacement to your triathlon training...or even a walk around the block:

The Bad: - No way to create your own exercise program - You're forced to unlock most of the activities - Some games are rather shallow - Health and fitness assessments can be problematic - Board is sensitive, but you can still cheat at exercises.

With 8.7m units sold worldwide, Wii Fit has already grossed far more money than GTA IV. Nintendo’s exercise game continues selling about 225k units a week for the last couple of months. At that rate, Wii Fit will outsell GTA IV in absolute units before the end of 2008. Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter said; “Wii Fit is attaching at around a 30pc rate,” via e-mail, “so I suppose if that continues, it will outsell GTA.”

Wii Fit has dropped out of the ChartTrack/ELSPA All Formats top 40 (weekly sales in UK). Last week it was #2 on the Charts. The author guesses that it is due to stock issues at retail. On ChartTrack's Wii single-format chart, it was at #15.

The Currys retail chain, consisting of Currys, PC World and Dixons brands, has revealed that it sold a copy of Wii Fit every four seconds across the release weekend, making it the chain's fastest-selling game ever.

With Wii Fit, Nintendo has made exercising enjoyable. Not as enjoyable as eating a giant burger obviously, but it's a good effort. It's produced a superbly made peripheral and a piece of software that offers both entertainment and a sense of achievement. It's all very slick and lifestyle, with plenty of white everywhere, but there are the bold shapes, bright colours and moments of sheer charm you'd expect from Nintendo.
