I'm not surprised at all. Wii Fit will shortly, if it hasn't already, overtake the PS3.
Think about that for a second, there is a bigger install base to aim for by making a game that uses the Wii balance board, with relatively little investment it has to be said, than there is in spending $10m-$20m making a game for the PS3.
In the long term, this may change but for now, Wii Fit will have incredibly long legs and the PS3 doesn't look like gaining any traction over there in the near future.
@Just_Ben, If Wii Fit > Wii ever happen in Japan (in the same week), 5 months+ after release on Dec 07, that will be even more crazy. Especially since Wii Fit cost a lot (just like GHIII bundle)
The more crazy thing is that Wii Fit sells near on the same level as the Wii (70k Wii 55k Wii Fit?) something like that? So the attach rate goes up, slowly put still going up.
pretty crazy that it's 33% attach rate in japan. Though this won't hold true, if that attach rate continued everywhere, that'd be 40 million units with the currently projected Wii numbers
Wait, didn't we only just say Nintendo had sold five million Wiis in Japan? Scratch that. Make it six. And while you're at it, note that of those six million Wii owners, two million of them have already bought Wii Fit. Two million! In less than six months!
The Good:
- Balance board is a great new peripheral
- Exercises will help your balance and strength
- Beats the repetitiveness of going to the gym
- Some fun balance board games
- Pleasant presentation throughout.
The Bad:
- No way to create your own exercise program
- You're forced to unlock most of the activities
- Some games are rather shallow
- Health and fitness assessments can be problematic
- Board is sensitive, but you can still cheat at exercises.
EDIT: I screwed up sorry. It's ~250K in the UK opening week and around ~350K overall. NeoGAF seem to think this ties in with some revenue figures from another source.
Online shoppers seem to have fed frenziedly on Wii Fit at Amazon.com, up for pre-order as of April 15, with the retailer already claiming its allocation of the Nintendo fitness title is already at capacity. The site says it is "actively seeking more of this product from suppliers" and we suspect that the impression that one will be able to get their hands on the game/non-game day one—as we foolishly suspected would be possible with the Wii itself—is looking less and less likely.
I wonder : Will a "fat" Mom be offended if her son / daughter bought her Wii Fit, a device that might be interpreted as "you-think-I-am-fat, don't you" kind of gift ?
Can those who heard about this kind of situation (whether through friend or forum sharing) share their take here ?
