NPD’s April videogame sales data didn’t show the rise in PS3 and Xbox 360 sales that some commentators had predicted GTA IV would drive, but a hardware sales boost may well be evident in May, according to a number of analysts.

The biggest All Formats No1 ever ‘Grand Theft Auto IV’ from Rockstar/Take 2 puts a stop to Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit’ workout, replacing it at the top and outselling it by over 9 to 1. Released across Xbox 360 and PS3, GTA IV almost breaks the 1m unit barrier in under a week, recording an estimated total market figure of 926,000 (£39.9m) over 5 days.

Publisher reveals figures at MI6 marketing conference, taking into account exchange rate.Activision has estimated that the video games market is worth $10.4 billion in Europe, compared to $10.1 billion in the US.Kassoy also predicted that, in terms of numbers alone, more games sales will take place outside of the US than in it by the end of ‘this console cycle’

Pachter gives global 2008 hardware sales forecast

“I expect US and European Wii sales of 15 million units this year, expect sales of 360 to be 6.8 million, and expect sales of PS3 to be 10.3 million,” he said. “I expect Japanese sales of 3.5 million Wiis, 2.8 million PS3 and 300,000 Xbox 360s.”

Toshiba set to lose $1 billion over HD-DVD format death

Toshiba wasn’t going to lose the next-gen DVD battle and leave unscathed. According to the Nikkei business daily, Toshiba will likely face a 100 billion yen ($986 million US) loss in its HD DVD business. The death of HD DVD is also expected to post a full-year profit of 250 billion yen ($2.5 billion US), falling short of its outlook.
