PC: Spore Slip Sliding Away - Delayed to end 2008

Kotaku - June 20, 2007

Submitted by jayen (687) at 6:10PM PST on June 19, 2007

The latest Game Informer reports that Spore has been "delayed indefinitely", but reached for comment today, Electronic Arts says that "Spore has slipped out of fiscal 08 and into fiscal 09". Either way you cut it, it means that the game we've all been waiting to play on our computers isn't coming anytime soon.

Will Wright said during an interview with the BBC's Radio 5 Live yesterday. According to Wright, the game is fully playable from start to finish at this point, and has entered final testing. "We've had to do a lot of testing to make sure that the game is accessible by a wide group of people", Wright went on to explain."I want the people who have played The Sims to be able to play Spore - I don't want it to be some thing just hardcore gamers play."

Europe is 60% of the market and priority for Spore

GamesIndustry - February 13, 2008

Submitted by deftangel (291) at 6:57AM PST on February 13, 2008

Maxis's Patrick Buechner has explained why Spore is to be released in Europe on September 5, two days earlier than in the US. Asked if Maxis was always aiming for a simultaneous release Buechner said, "Oh, absolutely. Europe probably represents about 60 per cent or more of our PC business, so getting it right in Europe is going to be a real focus over the next few months."

According to an EA rep who spoke with Next-Gen, Spore hasn't actually been pushed back again, despite that quote in Game Informer that it had been "delayed indefinitely".

IGN Reviews Spore - 8.8

IGN - September 4, 2008

Yet while Spore is an amazing product, it's just not quite an amazing game. I can't help but feel that Spore is ambitious and memorable, but I also admit that, save for the cool Space Stage, there's not a lot of depth here. Rookie gamers are going to feel at home here, but veteran gamers may feel like they need more. Still, Spore proves to be one of the most unique products in recent memory, one that reaches for the stars and ends up giving us a universe in a box.
