I didn't mean to imply that other company's don't Spin things. It's a marketing strategy that seems to work and I don't blame them for trying to put things in the best light possible. It just gets rough sometimes when articles incorrectly or inadequately quote the sales figures to give you the wrong impression on what they actually mean.
Every company 'spins' it that way...remember MS 'selling' 10 million Xbox by last November? Now there most recent quarterly (Mar 31) shows they've SHIPPED only 11 million so far.
Ah, missed that. Figures with the way Sony likes to spin everything.
Doesn't matter for this particular discussion though, it's still possible that Sony will sell that many since it's likely GTA IV will have at the very least a 1 year life cycle, more than likely it will continue to sell for 2-3 years after launch.
Also keep in mind that this stock is still in it's announcement phase of on the SimExchange, were the stock price is based on hype, not on predicted sales. It will continue to rise until reviews come out, if the reviews are favorable it will continue to rise until the actual sales numbers come out and then plummet down to a reasonable number.
Yep...that is their March 31 report ... it is 5.5 million SHIPPED not sold to consumers.
Here is clarification as recently as June 21 from Howard Stringer himself:
Howard Stringer, CEO of the Sony Corporation, said of the PS3, “All the production problems have been solved,” at the company's annual general meeting.
Stringer dismissed claims that the PS3 is floundering, telling 6,700 assembled shareholders that 5.5 million of the consoles have been shipped since its launch last November. Of course, the number shipped is categorically not the same as the number sold out of retail, but Sony's not telling on that front.
Where are the stats for 5.5 million sold? It was only March 31 2007 when Sony claimed 5.5 shipped so it would be GREAT for PS3 if 5.5 million sold was correct....
This is because we are predicting the lifetime sales of the game, not the launch sales. As time passes there will be more PS3's sold, they are already 5.5 million PS3s sold worldwide, not 3 million.
to be honest, i'm not so sure about this stock anymore .... over 7 million copies sold is huge. at this rate there might not even be that many PS3's sold by release, and that combined with the cheaper 360 having exclusive downloadable content is a big down side. i own both PS3 and 360, and for that reason alone i know i'll be buying the 360 version, the question is, do 7.3 million people disagree with me?

That's with a 100% attachement rate. You're saying that everyone who owns a ps3 will purchase GTA.. that's unheard of.
Even with an amazing 30% attachement rate, Sony would need to sell 23 million consoles!!!
These GTA estimates are plain stupid and anyone believing that they could sell that many is a crazed fanboy.
Side note: 360 version will get episodic content, so any multi-console users will most likely choose the 360 version over the PS3.
