I shorted this to 3.5m as that's where I believe it's true value lies. EA reported in their last financials that Spore had sold "2m" but they weren't clear if that was including DS, iPhone SKU's etc.
Of course it's a big franchise so they will leverage it as much as possible. I revised my target to 3.5m - 4m when I heard it was going on Steam. However, I've had to get completely out of this stock to move money elsewhere so by and large, the jump from 4m was me.
Is there any news detailing sales of this title? The initial stuff indicated the GLS stock was way overpriced, but it appears this stock has been climbing. Just people covering shorts or something actually indicating higher sales?
TorrentFreak put up a list of the top 10 games copied and shared over BitTorrent for the year 2008, and Spore, quite unsurprisingly, leads them all by a country mile.
Naturally, the hard feelings and retaliation over its DRM inclusion helped boost the number of torrents for this game, already downloaded half a million times by 10 days after its September release, and 1.7 million times as of now.
I know this is an older article, but it has an interesting commentary on DRM.
"If we can learn anything from the troubled launch of Spore, a videogame many people have been looking forward to for years, it is that binding products with digital rights management (DRM) restrictions hurts more than it helps."
GameStop's listing for Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack is back, and this time it's official. Along with officially announcing today the first add-on pack for Will Wright and Maxis' evolution simulator Spore--10 days after it was spotted in the specialty retailer's online database--EA also revealed the game's first expansion, which will focus on the Space Age.
EMERYVILLE, Calif. Electronic Arts Inc. today announced that Spore has sold through more than one million copies at retail worldwide on the PC, Mac and Nintendo DS, since shipping worldwide on September 7th.
EA is expanding its Spore Online Accounts to allow multiple users. Users can have up to five screen names per online account.
The publisher received criticism from game owners over Spore's limit of one account per copy, which many felt was too restrictive for homes with several members looking to play the title. The issue was exacerbated by a misprint in Spore's manual claiming that users can have "multiple Spore accounts for each installation of the game."
