I consider GT a system seller. I know many people who are buying PS3/have bought PS1/PS2's only for GT. Some even only bought the GT games and no others. Anyways, GT is a great series, I certainly enjoy it and so do millions. It is always AAA quality. The #'s don't lie.
GT1: 10.85 mil GT2: 9.37 mil GT3: 14.84 mil GT4: 8.02 mil
excellent points Arbiter. I'm not saying it wont sell well, i'm just saying that it wont sell that many ps3's. Especially not 6 million. This whole argument got blown out of proportion.
This is coming from the comment
"The previous installment of the series sold more than 10 millions. There is no way the first PS3 GT will sell less than that."
I simply said that its not going to sell that many. thats all I meant. Do you not Agree?
About the Gears of war stuff, yes its a good game, yes it sold well. But couldn't it also be because the competition didn't have a competitor for it? And the public had to buy something for the holidays?
@eRock, Sony said in early January they expect to ship 6 million PS3s by March. Search "Sony 6M" in the search bar and you'll see an article submitted from Gamespot (has like 4 bids on it). However, I do recall since then there was another article saying they are revising lower.
Gears of War was definitely a system seller. That was the big catalyst for Xbox 360 sales this holiday season. A system seller is a killer app- the must have game that is only available for that system that makes people want to buy the system just for the game. Gears of War is definitely an example.
The Gran Turismo brand blows away the Forza brand. Before it was listed, people were asking what the game was because the listing only said it was the sequel. Forza came out at a time when no one was caring about the Xbox anymore. Also, most gamers consider the Project Gotham Racing franchise as MSFT's big racer (though they may not actually follow racing games at all). On the other hand GT3 was a huge system mover for the PS2. Grand Turismo games are some of the best selling games of all time.
I dont know what those numbers mean but ok. Halo is a system seller simply because their was nothing better on the original xbox (IMO).
There was no real competition to Halo on the PS2 agreed? IT was in a Niche FPS market.
Games like GT, while high quality are limited by the fact that their is fierce competition. Forza 2 is a good example.
Forza 2, while a great game, wont be a system seller for 2 reasons.
1) Its coming out later in the consoles life.
2) Its just another racing game.
I stick by my original thought. It will sell well, but its not MGS4. Its not Halo, Its not Zelda.
I don't even consider Gears of War to be a system seller. none of my friends bought a 360 just to play gears of war. very few will buy a PS3 just so they can drive a car around, especially when Forza 2 delivers the same experience but for a cheaper system.
You still didn't answer my question about where you heard their was going to be 6,000,000 PS3's by March. Instead you avoided the question. Which proves to me that these numbers are false.
In fact, you answered none of my questions. Hmmm.... Interesting
So I guess Halo is not a system seller/ not that popular either?

Sony also said they would have some 4 million PS3's for Launch. We all know how that turned out. Do you have a source for your 6 million PS3's by March?
GTA is not a system seller. It is not an exclusive title and therefore wont sell only 1 system.
GT is not a system seller. Its popular, but its not that popular.
there are going to be 6 million PS3 by march, according to Sony. By the time GT5 comes out, there will be way more than 10 million. And GT is one of the biggest system sellers, second only to GTA.

A playstation 2 owner has a 13.3% chance of owning GT3 (the one with the highest sales)
A xbox owner has a 33% chance of owning Halo 2.
halo 2 had almost 3x as much "system selling" capability then GT3.
adding all the GT's together thats a 39% chance of a ps2 owner owning any GT game.
A xbox owner has a 60% chance of owning any halo game.
Im not trying to prove anything, just thought that this was pretty interesting.
again
ps2 --> 39%
xbox--> 60%
