"When Famitsu rates a game high, they do it out of respect for the readers -- avid players of Kingdom Hearts as most of them are. Avid players of Kingdom Hearts don't want to be told what Famitsu really thinks of their ****ing piece of **** hobby. So Famitsu awards the "courtesy score" -- which used to be all nines and a ten, and is now all tens and a nine. When Famitsu KNOWS a game is going to sell 2 million copies in a week regardless of what they say, this is what they do."
It seems likely they inflated their score because RE is a well known series. For those wondering if this is a purchase or not, wait until some more reviews are out.
Of course, the review will still increase hype in Japan, leading to a rise in sales, even though the review may not be very trustworthy.
Two editors gave the game a perfect score of 10, and the other two gave 9s. They said the new Wiimote controls are easy-to-learn, but made the game fresh and increased the tension.
700k seems like a fairly realistic prediction although it will have to shwo some legs. I expect it will do something like 125-150k in Japan, similar to slightly higher numbers in Europe, and a bit more than double that (300-325k) in America.
The budget price should draw in consumers who missed out on picking this up for the PS2 or GameCube and the newly added controls and native widescreen should entice previous owners to give it another shot. I know I plan to.
I think this actually will edge close to a million, as we're predicting now. I think the $30 price tag will help considerably, as there's no game made for Wii at that price that's actually this good. Then you've got people who just want every Resident Evil game no matter what, and people who never bothered getting the first incarnations for whatever reasons- maybe they only had an XBox, maybe they beat it on a rental like I did, whatever. I don't see it actually hitting a million, though, but perhaps just over 750,000.
The projected price seems a bit optimistic, after all this game has been out for awhile on both the PS2 and Gamecube. It sold around 1.9 million copies on the PS2 and about 1.6 million copies on the Gamecube. I think most people that want to play the game have already, and while a few might want to play it again with the Wii controller, I don't think they are enough to boost sales. I also don't see as many new users picking this game up for the Wii, it is in a different vein than most other Wii games. In the end I think this game will sell around 600,000 copies over its lifetime.
