Xbox 360 best-seller Halo 3 not only received rave reviews from the critics, but it is also likely to pick up gasps from industry outsiders after it was revealed that the game cost an estimated £15 million ($30 million) to develop, with several more millions spent on marketing.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter stated that he anticipates September's top release will be Halo 3, which he expects to sell over 3 million units in its first 12 days. Pachter also said the game is expected to drive console sales, and predicts that unit sales for Xbox 360 could exceed 400,000 in September in its highest figures of any non-holiday month since launch.

"The campaign, which is very good, is Halo 3's weakest point. It doesn't capture the cavalier spirit of the original Halo, but you'll still have fun playing through it. There's no first-person shooter on 360 that can equal Halo 3's blend of cinematic action, adrenaline-pumping shootouts, and male- (and female)-bonding gameplay. Look beyond the gameplay and you have a rich feature set unlike anything ever delivered in a videogame. The Forge and the replay functionality raise the bar for console shooters so high, it may never be surpassed this generation. There will be plenty of aspects for fans to nitpick, but it's hard to argue against Halo 3 as the most complete game available on any console."

Microsoft has found a nice way to deal with those breaking street date on Halo3. If you play the game before the official release date they will ban you from Xbox live.

The Halo 3 singleplayer expansion now has a setting and a rough release date. The expansion will serve as a prequel to the events of Halo 3, with the player taking the role of an ODST recon marine, who is our "new hero" for a "new campaign". The expansion will be out in "Fall 2009", with screenshots and video expected sometime soon.

It appears that Halo 3 has now officially outranked both Gears of War - (and, thus) - every other game in terms of hours played on Xbox Live. This knocks Gears of War from its #1 position held since its release last year.
