The article states the "worldwide" launch of the PC version, as opposed to N.America only for the PS3. In fact, a quick search finds that the PC version launched back in November for Europe (this is even listed on this site).
@Laoldar, Why do you think the majority of them were sold on the PC? Traditionally the PC version of a game, especially FPS sell roughly 20% of less of the total volume of a game in it's lifetime, with the majority of that coming from PC sales in Europe. This game hasn't launched in Europe and we all know that the PC game sales in the US are pathetic.
They didn't ship 1.2 million PS3 copies. That total counts both PC and PS3 versions, with the PC version possibly having the majority of it. Just something to consider. (both games combined have a current price of about 1.7 million).
but they wouldnt ship that much unless there was a demand for most of it, initial shipments probably would have been in the 500,000 region im guessing, so if theyve had to ship more its obvious that the game is selling reasonably well. what with sales from europe to come i can see this game easily going above and beyond the current prediction, hence why im long on it.
They might not sell at full retail price, but eventually they do get sold, retailers don't just trash games if they don't sell at $60, they drop the price until they are sold. There might not be 1.2 million people willing to buy it at $60, but there are 1.2 million people who will buy it, the question is how much do retailers have to drop the price to get the rest of the inventory sold, and how long will it continue to sell decently at $60 causing them to order additional copies raising the shipped number.
@pilias_simber, hmm, I never understood the logic that "eventually anything shipped sells." Things only sell if you have enough customers willing to buy the product. If there just aren't 1.2 million people out there willing to buy UT3 (PS3), it doesn't matter that the publisher shipped 1.2 million copies. This is the case with any product. Eventually inventory is just written off and thrown out...they don't take up valuable shelf space forever.
Remember that since Global Lifetime Sales reflects totals sold in all time, on top of the fact that the PS3 sells very well in Europe that eventually anything shipped sells and when you add that to the total of additional units that will be shipped you have quite a deal of room for this stock to grow.
Remember, shipping 1.2 million units to retail is not the same as selling 1.2 million units to consumers. The stocks forecast number sold through, not the number shipped in.
Midway Games has today confirmed that Unreal Tournament 3 for PlayStation 3 will hit store shelves across Europe on Friday February 22.
The imminent availability of the PS3 version across Europe follows a successful worldwide launch of the PC version and PS3 version in North America. Including the North American PS3 release the game has shipped over 1.2 million units worldwide and this figure is sure to rise thanks to European sales.
