With HD DVD defeated one might think that electronics manufacturers would get behind the victorious Blu-ray format in full force. That doesn't seem to be the case, however, according to a report in The Korea Times. South Korea, home to major electronics companies such as Samsung and LG, is unlikely to see any accelerated adoption of the new high definition format.

In a recent press release, Sony Computer Entertainment America announced the appointment of three new key executives: Robert Dyer to Senior Vice President of Publisher Relations, Ian Jackson to Vice President of Sales and Sally Buchanan to Vice President of Human Resources. These positions will take effect in March and April of 2008, and the executives will report directly to SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton.

For a brief moment this week, the PlayStation 3 site touted (via NeoGaf) the ability to "talk to others during gameplay." The ability to access the cross-media bar (XMB) and send messages in-game has been long at the top of wish lists.

A week and a half after reaching the million player mark, Sony Online Entertainment's Free Realms has gone and doubled it. The player population of Free Realms continues to grow at a ridiculous rate, hitting the two million player milestone within a month of the game's official launch. According to SOE, the game is a big hit with its target audience, with 75% of its registrants under age 17 and 46% under 13.

Sony has revealed that unit sales of all three PlayStation hardware brands were down in the third quarter ended December 31, 2008, with the company's game division recording sales and operating revenue of JPY 393.8 billion (USD 4,328 million), down 32.2 per cent when compared to the previous year.

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment exec Kaz Hirai announced "Life with PlayStation" for the PS3. During the presentation, the "Life" was demoed for the audience for the first time - the service shows the Earth, and users can access current news and weather for locations around the world. It's possible to even pull up the full article from the headline. Users can also set background music while looking at the Earth, checking the weather and the world news.
