You both make valid points. We are going to see a record breaking title with H3 no matter what. My bet is it is in revenue. Simply due to the higher price point of the game compared to its predecessors.
The limitations on sales figures due to the console exclusivity will definitely have an impact on numbers of titles sold though. However, I would anticipate the strengthof the title putting another 250,000 360 in homes that would otherwise not have the system.
@melloncollie, yes we are talking about a game's lifespan. I think there is somewhat a misconception of how many copies video games actually sell. In their entire lifespan, over the past 30 years of video games, only 10 games have sold 15 million copies...and these games are the likes of Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt which shipped with the Nintendo Entertainment System and Tetris that shipped with the original GameBoy.
It is extremely unlikely that a video game will ever sell 15 million copies again in the near future, especially for a game exclusive to one system in today's console environment. 10 million is a huge number in the world of video games. 15 million is absurd. Most games don't even come close to selling 1 million copies.
@Alpha, Oh I realize this but we're talking about the games lifespan. This is the last installment (I hear), this may very well be the best of the three (so say Bungie Dev.), continuation with Live downloadable content. It simply seems that that mark is possible, at least to me.
melloncollie, Halo 3 will sell well, but let's stay realistic. "Easily sell over 15 million units?" Only 10 video games in history have sold over 15 million copies and they are all named Super Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, Pokemon, and the Sims.
No games on a modern console have even come anywhere close to that figure. GTA and GT3 were the only console games of recent age to surpass 10 million copies sold. Halo 2, in a very mature stage of the Xbox console only sold 7.91 million copies worldwide.
According to Bungie Halo 2 was somewhat of a letdown. Not enough production time. With this installment they'll be taking the time to iron out every problem they can think of. On top of that Halo has always been Microsoft's top-selling franchise, it's a system seller. They'll put they're steam power into backing this one. I believe that it can easily sell well over 15 million units easily in its lifetime, and that's just an under exaggerated estimate.
Halo 1 sold 6.44 million and Halo 2 has sold 7.91 million worldwide, with plenty of time to sell more. If the trend continuous Halo 3 is looking at sales of over 9.5 million. In fact its a pretty safe bet that launch numbers will be over 4.5 million easily. So in short GoblinMerchant the price is definitely legit and in fact undervalued. Thus making this a sure fire investment for the future.
a lot of people on this site are new to the stock exchange, and i don't think they get it entirely. As long as there is still green on their accounts i doubt they'd know when to sell. All the new ones know is how buy.
