GTA IV to allow real-world music downloads with Amazon

The soundtrack has to be one of the best parts of the Grand Theft Auto experience. Now, you'll be able to take those tracks with you back into the real world thanks to a cool new service that will let you mark tracks for download in game. It works like this: You hear a song you like, you'll call an in-game service called "ZiT" on your mobile phone to mark it. You'll get a text message with the song and artist name and be able to download the song from Amazon's music site for $0.89 to $0.99.

Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. Chairman Strauss Zelnick, head of a new management team, said on Monday he prefers to run the publisher of the hit Grand Theft Auto video game series rather than sell it. "I'm much more interested in growing the business than in selling it, to be clear," Zelnick told the Reuters Media Summit. "I would say for the next five to seven years this is a terrific time to be in the video game business."

I posted my bullets from the Microsoft Blogger Breakfast the other day and some info about GTAIV was taken out of context…well sort of. People are claiming that Microsoft announced the game would be as big as Vice City/San Andreas. I posted comments on some of the bullets and putting 2 and 2 together I came up with some facts and opinion on GTAIV.

Earlier this year, Hudson Square Research analyst Daniel Ernst issued estimates for Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto IV, pegging 2008 sales for the title at 13 million copies. Today, Ernst upped his estimate to 15 million on word from Take-Two that the publisher had already sold through 8.5 million copies of GTA IV, with 11 million shipped to retailers. Ernst noted that "We expect GTA IV sales to re-accelerate in the latter part of year in conjunction with the seasonal holiday period."

Why is it that video games are subject to the morality police more often than Hollywood movies? GTA and other games are protested for their violence, language, drug use, etc. while no one protests violent movies where someone's brain gets vaporized by a pressurized air canister or someone is killed over a coin toss. “No Country for Old Men” received “Best Picture” while GTA is protested…
